Peter and the Wolf, composed by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936, is a delightful and imaginative orchestral work that introduces children to the orchestra's instruments. The story, which follows a young boy named Peter as he bravely captures a wolf, is narrated alongside the music, with each character represented by a different instrument. The piece is both playful and dramatic, making it a perfect introduction to classical music for young audiences.

The story

The main character of the story is a 9-year-old boy called Peter. Peter likes going out to the meadow to meet and play with his animal friends (the duck, the bird, and the cat) even though his grandfather warns him of the danger he is in, as a ferocious wolf is prowling around the area, frightening everyone. Pedro is brave and not only confronts the wolf but, with his intelligence and the help of his friends, he manages to set a trap and catch it. Finally, some hunters passing by help them to take the wolf to a zoo so that it does not cause any more trouble.

The characters

Each character in the story is represented by an instrument and an associated musical theme or leitmotif:

  • Peter: string family (violin, violas, violoncellos, and double bass).
  • Grandfather: bassoon
  • Bird: flute
  • Duck: oboe
  • Cat: clarinet
  • Wolf: horns
  • Hunters: timpani and bass drum.

Peter and the Wolf will be narrated in English by Waltraud Meier, a world-renowned opera singer with an ensemble conducted by Yaron Traub. It will take place at the Cautivador Hall (located in El Cautivador, next to the Ermita de San Vicente) on Saturday, 8 March at 5.30 p.m.
